Creating a Microbevel on Hardwood Flooring

First thing that may come to question, when reading the title of this blog is: Why would I ever need to make a microbevel?

The answer is pretty simple actually. If you are replacing a hardwood wood board/plank and your board is longer than the one you are taking out, you will need to create a matching beveled edge. (If you floor does have a bevel to begin with) when you cut your new board down to size.

A main idea here, is not to over think it, this is a simple task to undertake.

  1. Study your flooring and look at what the bevel looks like. You will need to try to recreate this bevel. Most of these are a simple flat angle.

  2. Take it nice and slow. You will need a sanding block. This is best to do by hand, so you do not over sand and have to start over. (Be aware if you have an engineered product, there is only a small thin layer on the top to sand, if you sand past this, you will see raw, plywood.) Start sanding the edge to match, the best you can!

  3. Once you have the form that you are happy with, this edge needs to be sealed/stained. We like to use a simple stain pen. These have a combination of stain plus a sealer compound in them, so the stain is protected. Find the right stain pen to match, and stain the edge. If you are really worried about it not being sealed, you can always touch it with a polyurethane to really hold the stain in. Be careful not to overdo it.
